Rock Run Landing's
2001 Fish Pictures
Page 1
Unfortunately there aren't as many pictures for this year. 2001 started out good with a large amount of river flow making a very healthy river. This year we saw two runs of Herring, the first was great and the second was much larger than we have ever seen in the 20+ years we have been here. It seemed as though all of the hard work, trying to clean up the water ways was finally starting to paying off with millions of Herring (good bait fish) returning to spawn. Below is a paragraph from my 5/07/01 Fishing Report.
"Monday 5/07/01
Because of the lack of rain and the greed of men, the river flow has been
less then necessary at times to sustain the overwhelming numbers of fish that
have returned to spawn in the Susquehanna River.
Thursday and Friday of last week we noticed a very large number of dead and
dying Herring floating down river. There wasn't three feet between dead fish and
they were from the surface down to about three feet deep in the water. Many
observers estimated there was at least one million or more dead Herring!
In this day and age we are more interested in our stock profits than the world
around us so all of you who have electric utility stock made a little more money
last week with the peak generation for air conditioning. Too bad the Herring
couldn't hold their breath until the dam decided to turn on a little extra
water.
I have asthma so I know what suffocation feels like; maybe some of you
"stock holders" will get the chance to experience the same, during
your lifetime."
All of the reports that I have read concerning the "2001 Herring Kill" grossly underplayed and underestimated the amount of dead Herring and the amount of damage to the Susquehanna River environment. Because of this crime to nature the river fishing all but stopped for several months.
Joe Townsend of Port Deposit, MD.

Dough Harrell of Churchville, MD. caught this 15.5 pound Striper on a Chrome Creek Chub at The Graveyard.
12 year old Daniel Wilson of Newark DE. caught these nice fish while casting Chrome Creek Chubs just above The VFW.
